Mother tongue or first language is perhaps the most favorite thing to any person in the world. In 1952, Bangladesh observed Language Movement. February 21 is now the International Mother Tongue Day celebrated all over the world.
However, our mother tongue cannot fulfill all our needs in 21st century. We live in a connected world. Thanks to the advancement of communication system and technology. Every country is dependent on others for trade and commerce, education, politics etc. As a result, we have to constantly communicate with other countries and speakers of other languages.
This is why, we need to learn other language in addition to our mother tongue. In Bangladeshi scenario, English is that language. It is the only language that we learn aside from our mother tongue in our educational institutions-schools, colleges and universities. Unfortunately, a significant portion of our educated people does not have adequate level of proficiency in English language.
One of the main reasons behind this is that English language learning remained mostly grammar centered in our country. From very young age, it is drilled in a student’s mind that the only way he or she could become proficient in English language is by memorizing grammar. This leads to rote learning. For this reason, many young people eventually lose interest in English or just focus on memorizing grammar and translation so that he can pass his exams.
Eventually, when they finish their university education and start their career, they find out that they have not learned anything. Out of fear of being ridiculed, they do not even dare use English. As a result, these people cannot advance in their careers and feel miserable.
Seeing this gap between teaching of English and real-life implications of English language, few enterprising people came together to create Pacific English Language Club.
